I have to hand it to you! You took a junky piece of shit and turned it into a 11 sec sleeper
Only ONE thing you need to know. The MR2 is better in every, single, way.
What about outer body rust-through? I just sank your battleship.
If people would read their owners manual they would know.
LS2 with the same SAE Horsepower rating at the time of the LS3 would make 412HP The LS3 does flow much better out of the box with the intake manifold and head porting than an LS2 so once cammed or boosted it would make more of a difference. The 08-13 Corvettes got the TR6060 which is stronger and a beefier splined diff as well. The 09+ C6s all got Variable Steering and the LS9 block (also used in LSA) which made those engines have different bearings and more main bolts. This was to save on cost for only one production block (similar to LS1-LS6 did in 2001). The LS2 however does have higher compression out the gate. With a Cam, Heads, intake+manifold, and headers all that cost less than a LS3's parts it will make similar horsepower. The OE tune however pulls timing very severely to be safe. Even stock cars with a throttle body and tune see a increase in power on a dyno and the street.
Good stuff, appreciate the comment!
@Toys4Life C5 you forgot about the Corvair!
No sir, IMO that is a rear engine car with the engine behind the drive wheels.
@@Toys4Life gocha !
A much better swap than the 3.8 is a VW/Audi 1.8 20v turbo and 6 speed box. Smaller, lighter, more tuneable and more reliable
Disagree on multiple fronts.
No need for hi temp paint ?
Not less your going road racing or dragging the brakes down a mountain. I've had calipers painted 20 years with regular epoxy and no issues.
Thanks
That's the Fiero GM should have built. Buddy of mine had one in the 90s we used to rip donuts in place the front wheel would never leave its pivot point. Loads of fun.
I think a great Deal.....I had a 2009 Atomic Orange LT3 C6 that I paid 30K for in 2014.....it had long tube headers Billy Boat exhaust tinted top 6 speed manual..... It was one of about 400 of that year....53k on it when I traded it in on a 2016 C7 8 speed automatic...... I wish I still had the C6.....
Are you sending you like the C6 better than the seven, or that you want to keep them both? Details please (:-)
It was always the engine. If the car had a better engine back in the day, Quad 4 or 3800 S/C, it would be on sale (and that abysmal 3rd gen Fiero would have been WAY different) at least until GM canned Pontiac... or maybe they wold not have.
You can just swap in a 3.9l 60 degree V6 to replace a 2.8 engine. Drops right in. Some came with like 240hp.
It's plug and play? Just kidding.
Bought a C5 hatchback a little while ago and I love this car and am no where near driving it as well as it can
That’s not a Nissan 3000gt. It’s a Mitsubishi 3000 gt. Nissan didn’t make them.
I had a slip of the tongue! Actually a decent car though,, there was like a Dodge stealth ES as well wasn't there, same thing?
C&S Corvettes has a good video on the reliability differences between the two motors. Clean LS3 cars are hard to come by on the west coast. 200 mile range does nothing for your search results. You practically have to look as far as Texas. I had a 2005 LS2 car and after looking decided that getting into a C6 grandsport with the LS3 was a bad value so I ended up buying a 2014 Z51 Stingray. Interest rates are definitely a factor for the older cars!
Looks like I need to pick up a few here in the mid-west and sell them in CA. I have seen that CS video, but in it he talks about the internally balanced LS2 losing its balance somehow - without any specifics. I (and quite a few other people) have a little heartburn with how that would be possible and I don't know of anyone else that has seen that happen. All LS motors have vibration dampener issues - but even those are neutrally balanced.... Not saying he's wrong, just saying nobody else seems to be seeing that issue.
Friend, amazon sells a water and blower wand that is skinny and fits in without having to remove parts. Works wonderful. Also, when you blow out your radiator, put a piece of cardboard between it and your condenser so your not blowing dirt from the radiator into the condenser. In any event, right idea.
Friend - yep, Radiator geni. Still need to remove the fan shroud to get at most of the radiator IMO. Your cardboard idea is not terribly helpful - it blocks airflow - and airflow is what you need to drive the crud back out towards the front. The big chunks are stuck to the front of the condenser, the smaller junk that made it in from the front can be blown back out the front. Looks like we disagree on methodology. Where are the myth-busters when you need them. At any rate - both methods are better than the head in the sand method. Cheers!
@@Toys4Life Ok, I'll tell you what. Many thanks to you RUclips guys for putting these videos up. Just spent 3 hours cleaning condenser and radiator fins on a "running hot vet". Worked like a charm. I would never have guessed that much dirt and grit got up in there. In defense of GM, the design is very good. My kids 1998 C5 condenser and radiator are in fantastic shape, just were clogged with dirt. I'm in Vegas - a dirty, dusty town, but I can see where this would be common throughout the desert southwest.
Good info, but your "pop-ups" are only on for 2-3 seconds and difficult to read at that.
Thanks. Pop up time noted - thanks for letting me know!
Great video
Thanks!
The C8 weighs 3600lbs, not 3300lbs. otherwise than that, this video is perfect! It's rare to find a video on youtube that is so accurate and insightful, you've got yourself a follower!
Appreciate the kind words and good catch on the C8 weight - clearly I blew that ☹️.
Beginning of the video: LS2 and LS3 are basically the same. End of the video: Ls3 has better motor components and better transmission. LOL
Sorry about that - I must have had the bouncing balls too far apart, if you want a nice powerful C6 and you're going to leave it at that like most people do, LS2 is fine. If you want a nice fast C6 and you plan to modify the piss out of it, get an LS3 (:-).
@@Toys4Life if you’re stretching every penny to get into a corvette, then an LS2 is a fine choice if you can find a smoking deal. Ls2’s are associated with the 2005 c6 which is generally thought of to be a real problem and not very desirable. But if the extra cost to get into an ls3 is not an issue, there is no reason to buy an ls2. Whether real or fiction, the perception that the ls3 is superior is cemented in the corvette community. For resale or value retention, therefore, the ls3 should always be chosen.
Toss a little 100 shot nitrous intonit
I’ve had both. I had 07 Z51 6spd manual and an 08 non-Z51 auto which means the weak 2.59 rear gear. The 07 had a Callaway Honker and Billy Boat bullet exhaust. I don’t know if it had a tune but I suspect it did. I bought it back in 09 at a dealership so couldn’t ask the previous owner. The 07 was a beast and much more fun to drive. The auto neutered the 08. Between the 2.59 gears and stock programming to upshift to OD even at low speeds it wasn’t really a fun car honestly. The paddles were slow. The only place it was fun was on the interstate from a roll if you went WOT and after it kicked down it was an absolute missile. I didn’t keep that car long. I compared it back then to flying a fighter vs a fast high speed bomber. Completely different experiences. I could absolutely tell the difference handling too btw Z51 vs non Z51 on the street.
No thanks
No problem.
Put the Fast ( or better yet, the MSD ) intake on a LS3 & you are over 450hp, just though I would mention that
I've been mainly focused on the LS2s but I was of the thought process that the stock LS3 manifold equaled the fast and MSD on the LS3, or at the very least it didn't add much, am I wrong 😕?
Looking at a 2008 3LT Z51 package Convertible , 23,000 miles, 1 owner. Low 30s. Thoughts anyone?
Research on Cars.com, FB Marketplace, Craigslist and see what people are asking and assume you can get it for 5-10% less (ROUGHLY). As much market data as you can gather gives you the confidence you are paying a fair price for that car in that condition in YOUR area. Good luck!!
Outstanding Video! I had a C7 Grand Sport that I needed to sell since I was getting stationed in Guam for 3 years tour of duty. Navy here. Shipping it seemed like a horrible idea, storage was no good options for that long so I had no choice but to sell. Upon coming back this March 2024 I wanted to get back into a corvette right away. Since we just started a family and my wife is not working I opted for a 2013 C6 Grand Sport as a good compromise and I absolutely love it!!! At the price point it is a outstanding car. Still some modern tech and plenty fast for some parodical spirited driving and has wide body stance. Love the traditional circle tail lights that my C7 didn't have and most of all it is very affordable which is also important for ownership experience. Last thing I like a lot.... not active fuel management. Pure V8 uninterrupted goodness all the time.
It is a good compromise and would most likely be my second choice behind the C7 GS. Buy a manual and keep it out of eco mode and you won’t have to worry about ever switching over to 4 cylinders. The updated taillights were a welcome change. Just like pop up headlights and now the front engine layout, change is constant every generation
Thank you and I appreciate your service to our country! Glad you are enjoying the C6 GS - beautiful car!
Man that thing is a deceptive little sleeper putting down impressive times. I've seen some fast V8 swapped Fiero's but you can usually hear them coming from a mile away. My OCD does force me to point out a small mistake at 2:00 though. The Fiero was GM's first 'rear mid-engine' sports car. All Corvette were mid-engine(front mid) starting with the C1, as the engine has always been located completely behind the front wheels as opposed to above them.
I predicted the c6 was going to win. Having owned all 3 of the models discussed overall the c7 is by far the best. Coming in at a close 2nd would be the c6, especially since I had a 6 speed manual and I kinda miss cranking thru the gears. I had a manual c5 but the horsepower boost in the c6 made a big difference. So I do concur that if money is a significant factor get a c6 (manual). If you have extra cash get the c7. Imo the c7 looks alot better also. 😊
I do “daily” drive…mine…
Really like my LS2! Fast enough for my skill level! I have a relatively high mile 06 C6 with 115,000 miles on it, but has been perfectly maintained. Not hopped up and not beat. Only thing I wish was different is I wish it had a manual transmission!
Have the ls3 in the 5th gen camaro... that engine is an animal
03 without f-55 suspension. Is best
LS3 for me! No replacement for displacement.
How about positive displacement?
@@Toys4Life can’t get enough!
C4's get an unfair reputation from optispark. It's definitely not the best place to put a distributor, but mine never gave me any trouble before or after preventative replacement. I had a '92 Corvette that ended up being the worst car I ever owned. Avoid the '92 - '93 model years. These early LT1 cars had the most frail powertrain control modules that create all kinds of buggy issues that are a nightmare to troubleshoot. Add mandatory t-tops, the awkward step-in over the beam that was trying to keep some chassis rigidity without a roof, bad power draw, and a frustrating position for a battery, and the car just wasn't much fun. A '91 with the updated body style and an L98 would be a sweet spot for a C4.
Can this kit manage the additional heat for road course lapping?
IMO - no, nor can the brakes, or power steering (without a cooler). Road course HPDE racing creates heat everywhere!
love your C6 content. Keep it rolling!
Appreciate it!
I think they are both good. I would get a 06 or newer just because the 05 had the four-speed transmission instead of the six speed and it had the older steering wheel from the C5 generation. But besides that the 06 to 13’s either one is just fine.
Say I have a LS2 and I love it . If I need more power it would be easy to beef it up . But I don't it's plenty fast to get me a ticket if I do not watch my speed. LOL
What is the latest fix for a P0153 code from lt headers
When Lt headers are installed, it's very common to get slow response codes (P0133 & P0153). Another pain point for LT headers. Header wrap may help - keep the heat inside and activate the O2 sensors quicker. Move the bung closer to the engine? Different brand O2 sensor. Just some ideas.
I've heard that the LS2 is underrated by GM because they didn't want the new LS2 in 2005 (400hp) to have more power than the outgoing C5 Z06 (405hp) on paper. I would love to see someone actually dyno a stock LS2 and LS3 on the same dyno.
Ls3 makes about a solid 30 -35 more hp and tq in stock trim... seen both on an engine dyno
@7000U9ZHIFT that's because the LS3 has a better set of heads and a better intake manifold with a ever so slight bigger bore the heads and intake on the LS3 alone are a 30 horsepower increase if swapped to a LS2 down point is torque will be down a bit idle - 3500rpm with LS3 heads and intake manifold are superior 4500rpm to redline vs LS2 heads and intake manifold
The LSXr 102 manifold on the LS2 is worth close to 20 HP. It's well known that the stock LS2 intake manifold does in fact leave a lot to be desired. LS3 intake manifold flows very well.
@Toys4Life the FAST intake on the ls3 makes more power over the stock ls3 intake it's just not worth it for 1200$.... it helps the ls2 setup more than the ls3 ... both great engines.... I loveeee me the LS1 2 and 3 .... so much power potential in a simple setup
I'd still like to prove the theory if GM underrated the LS2 numbers. It would make for an interesting video. I have no doubt that the LS3 makes more power, but I'd be curious to know if GM did stick with 400hp for the LS2 on paper for sales reasons. I've also heard that the cathedral ports on the LS2 are better for low-end grunt. I'd like to know if the LS3 only pulls away on the dyno at higher RPM'S.
I went with a ls3 cause I can’t keep anything stock. For someone who wants a stock, narrow body c6 than a ls2 is the best bang for the buck. But for someone who wants a wide body, dry sump, and has modifications in mind than a ls3 is a better platform.
Good video!
Thank you sir!!
I always say zed because it’s fun also all I play is Led Zeppelin on my guitar
around WA state LS3 cars are like 27-35k but there also usually Grand sports so they have the wider body my car is a late 07 and i know the 08 cars werer the tr6060 but when i look at the gm options list/build sheet of my car it says manual tr6060 is it possible some late 07 cars got the tr 6 speed?
Not that I have heard - but anything is possible!
@@Toys4Life either way, I love my manual
For sure!
Also… as someone who’s done a couple of supercharged cars…. There’s an old formula that blower drive service , BDS, put out years ago, that I found to be fairly accurate in certain situations. Especially if you’re talking about 6 pounds of boost to maybe seven. As your boost goes up, your efficiency decreases, and then this formula doesn’t work as well to not very well at all. If you figure that 6 pounds of boost adds another .4, or 40% of another atmosphere to your car, breathing capability and you know that your car makes 1.14 hp/ cubic inch with an LS 3 , or 1.098 horsepower/ cube inch with an LS 2 one can guess the general ballpark for Peak, horsepower at 6 pounds a boost for an LS three (assuming supercharger efficiency is the same, and other factors are the same for both of them, which is an assumption for sure) of about 600 hp at the crank for the LS-3 and 559 hp at the crank for the LS-2. Try playing with that formula because it usually gets you in the ballpark. Again, remember higher boost figures start to play with efficiency, and then the formula doesn’t work so well. About the highest I’ve ever known it to Work was 7-8 pounds and even then it’s not as reliable. Six is usually real reliable.
LS3 has a tad lower compression as well - which helps is better for supercharging as well. Isn't the BDS stuff mainly for not intercooled roots style blowers - Centrifugals with intercoolers seem to work very well higher compression engines. Thoughts?
I enjoy the videos. I own a 07 vette with a ls2 and a 14 SS sport sedan with a ls3 and they both had harmonic balancer issues.
The stock harmonic balancer will not take much abuse if reving over 6000rpm repeatedly bottom line for performance use they suck
Living in southern Canada, bringing it out after winter is a great feeling.
INDEED!
Id follow the recommendation on the computer. Plus I use extended protection high mileage Mobil 1 so even at 6-7k miles, the oil is good for double that. Synthetic oil is so good, that as long as you get it hot you get the water off, I wouldn’t worry much about it
Unless you are a professional race car driver you will not notice the difference. Most corvette drivers can’t drive their cars to 70 percent of what they can do. So the 7 percent difference is not noticeable. But morons waist money on silly mods that do little instead of taking driving classes. Iv seen guys in Mazda Miatas lap zo6s at VIR.
I absolutely RESPECT the LS Miata's but I personally can't get past the looks for a track car.
Thanks for always making great content. I’ve never owned a corvette but one day I’ll own one for sure, probably a C6, I’ve a driven C7 and a couple C8s but my heart still lust after the C6 generation.
I was told that the LS2 Was badly internal balanced...? But cant find anything on the internet about it. Has to be some horse shit rumor :) Thanks for the video :)😀
The stock harmonic balancers suck it would last if your keeping rpm under 5500rpm if your reving this engine over 6000rpm repeatedly the stock balancer will go they are not a good option if you plan on pushing the motor real hard l have a 2009 Tahoe PPV 5.3 2WD with a stock balancer with over 150,000 miles on it it redlines at 5800rpm it's still runs very good
Since it's neutrally balanced, it's actually a vibration dampener. Even if the ring comes loose, other than damaging stuff, shouldn't affect the balance dramatically. Similar to people that use a lightweight flywheel.
